Practical Uses of GenAI for Academics

Dr. Chad Lane's research focuses on developing educational technologies that are as engaging as popular social media, video games, and movies. He aims to create intelligent technologies for learning and behavior change by blending techniques from the entertainment industry with those from artificial intelligence and intelligent tutoring systems. As a Professor of Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, and in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, his work explores the application of AI and entertainment technologies to improve learning experiences, particularly in informal settings. His teaching involves graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses on topics such as educational technologies, AI, informal learning, and design, where he encourages students to adopt an interdisciplinary perspective by blending psychological and educational theories with emerging technological developments.

Brainstorming Session: Students meet regularly to participate in informal discussion sessions that delve into cutting-edge AI topics. These regular meetings throughout the semester provide a platform for students to deepen understanding of specific areas and broaden knowledge by exploring cross-cutting connections between various AI disciplines. Discussions are a breeding ground for collaboration, innovative thinking, and problem-solving from the ground up. They provide a stress-free forum for exchanging ideas, brainstorming new approaches to challenges, and fostering lasting connections within the AI-SDM community in an environment distinct from a traditional seminar.
