Computer Science Professor Named ACM SIGMETRICS Rising Star

Faculty member Weina Wang received the 2023 Rising Star Research Award from ACM SIGMETRIC for developing tools that deepen understanding of how complex, heterogeneous stochastic systems perform.

The School of Computer Science's Weina Wang received the 2023 Rising Star Research Award from the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group for the Computer Performance Evaluation Community (ACM SIGMETRIC) for her development of new mathematical tools and algorithms that significantly deepen our understanding of the performance of complex, heterogeneous stochastic systems.

Wang, an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department, focuses on applied probability and stochastic systems, with applications in resource orchestration in large computing systems, data centers and privacy-preserving data analytics. These areas are the backbone of many ever-developing technologies, especially big-data technology. Her work aims to address the enormous challenges presented by these new technologies — scalability to large sizes, coordination of data and computation, ultra-low latency, economic efficiency, etc. — to provide a clear understanding of the fundamental limits of systems and build theoretical foundations for designing new architectures and algorithms.

ACM SIGMETRIC annually presents its Rising Star Research Award to a member of the academic community for the depth and impact of their work to create new ideas, paradigms and tools for performance analysis of computer and communication systems.
