Description of the University's Insurance Plan

The School of Computer Science participates in the University's equipment insurance pool each year. The pool was established to reimburse departments for capital equipment losses which fall beneath the deductible of $25,000 required by the university's property insurance policy. This pool provides coverage for:

  1. losses of capital equipment due to theft;
  2. capital equipment damaged by fire or water, but does not cover damages to facilities;
  3. the collision deductible on personal automobiles, up to a maximum of $500.00, if the automobile is involved in an accident while being used on official University business.

Conditions Under Which A Claim Will Be Paid

Theft losses must be reported immediately to Campus Police (x8.2323), or to the local police if the loss occurs at an off-campus location.

Each loss is subject to a $250 deductible unless equipment is protected by an electronic security system.

Thefts from unlocked rooms and other unsecured areas such as hallways, loading docks, etc. will not be reimbursed.

Thefts of donated or loaned equipment which has not been promptly reported to Property Accounting Services (contact Sandy Rocco) upon receipt will not be reimbursed.

Thefts of equipment from off-campus locations will not be reimbursed unless proper notification had been given. In all cases, where the intent is for equipment to remain off site for a period of 60 days or longer, proper documentation must be filed with Property Accounting Services (contact Help@cs.cmu.edu). For periods of less than 60 days departmental records should document proper approval (contact Help@cs.cmu.edu).

Thefts of University-owned equipment from personal residences must be reported as a claim against an individual's homeowners/tenants insurance policy. The Internal Insurance Pool will reimburse the difference of the proceeds received from the individual's insurance policy.
